Transvaginal Mesh

Millions of women experience some type of Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) or Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) in their lifetime. These are very common female health conditions, that are not spoken about often, because many women either do not know they have these conditions, or are embarrassed to discuss with anyone. Most cases of POP are diagnosed in women over the age of 50.

Urinary Incontinence (UI) is the most common symptom of POP. Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) can occur when the PC or pelvic floor muscles weaken and one or more organs shift out of their normal positions into the vaginal canal. In more serious cases of POP, tissues push through the vaginal canal and bulge outside of the body. The worse case scenario is a woman’s uterus can be completely outside of the vagina.

Thousands of women were told that there was a safe and easy procedure, but the medical mesh products started to fail and were deemed defective.

Transvaginal mesh is a medical product that can be surgically implanted in the vaginal wall to help treat Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP). This artificial mesh is designed to support connective tissue and keep the pelvic organs in place.Thousands of women were told that there was a safe and easy procedure to remedy their POP or incontinence. A simple piece of mesh would be implanted through the vagina to support the pelvic organs. The problem is that the medical mesh products started to fail and were deemed defective.

Women had to go back in for revision surgical procedures to remove the defective mesh and repair the problems. Unfortunately, many women that have received a transvaginal mesh implant have experienced severe pain, dangerous side effects, and even expensive revision surgeries.

If you or a loved one experienced any serious medical side effects caused by transvaginal mesh, Cariati Law may be able to help. Our Ontario, Canada Product Liability lawyers have extensive experience standing up to major medical device manufacturers on behalf of our clients.

Transvaginal Mesh Linked to Serious Complications

In May of 2014, Health Canada issued an official Notice to Hospitals about the potential health risks of using transvaginal mesh to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Health Canada alerted medical professionals that the agency has received multiple reports of complications, including life-altering events, from women that have received transvaginal mesh implants.

Health Canada advised that not only is the transvaginal mesh procedure linked to severe health risks, it may also be possible to successfully treat POP without the use of mesh. Doctors were told to consider the risks of transvaginal mesh carefully before recommending this procedure to their patients.

Injuries and adverse events reported by patients that received transvaginal mesh implants include:

• Abdominal Pain
• Infection
• Organ perforation
• Tissue erosion

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified transvaginal mesh as a Class III “high-risk” medical device in January of 2016. Many women that received transvaginal mesh have suffered severe side effects and have had to undergo painful and expensive revision surgeries due to dangerous product defects.
